Entering the new year as we are

The calendar turns.

One year becomes another, and for a moment it can feel as though we are standing at a clear dividing line between what has been and what comes next.

But our lives rarely arrange themselves so neatly.

We arrive at the end of a year carrying unfinished things with us.

Questions we haven't answered. Decisions we haven't made. Dreams that changed along the way. Work still in progress. Relationships still unfolding. Losses we're still learning to live with. Ideas that are only beginning to take shape.

And perhaps that is exactly as it should be.

Wabi-sabi reminds us that incompleteness is not a failure to finish. It is part of being alive.

We don't have to tie a ribbon around the year before we leave it behind.

We don't have to extract a lesson from everything that happened.

And we don't have to wake up on January first knowing who we intend to become.

The calendar can turn while we remain beautifully unfinished.

Still, there is something about the threshold of a new year that invites us to look back.

Not to grade the year.

Not to divide it into successes and failures.

Simply to notice.

What mattered?

What surprised us?

What became less important than we once thought it was?

What found its way into our lives that we hadn't known we needed?

What are we carrying simply because we've been carrying it for so long?

Looking back this way can help us recognize that some things still belong with us.

Others may have served their purpose.

A habit. An expectation. An obligation. An old idea about how life was supposed to look.

We don't have to discard these things angrily or declare them mistakes. Something can have been right for an earlier season and no longer be right for this one.

We can be grateful for what carried us here without asking it to accompany us any farther.

And some things aren't ready to be left behind at all.

A grief may still need room.

A decision may still be uncertain.

A dream may still be changing shape.

A question may simply need to remain a question for a while longer.

January doesn't require us to resolve any of them.

Nor does a new year require a new version of ourselves.

There may be things we want to change. Places we'd like to go. Things we'd like to make, learn, repair, begin, or finally finish.

But we don't have to reinvent ourselves to enter another year.

We can cross the threshold as we are.

Curious.

Hopeful, perhaps.

Uncertain about some things.

Still carrying others.

Open to possibilities we cannot see yet.

There is no way to know what the coming year will hold. That can be frightening. It can also make room for trust.

We can make plans without demanding that life follow them exactly.

We can choose a direction without knowing every step.

We can pay attention to what emerges and allow ourselves to change course when something no longer fits.

Perhaps that is enough.

So rather than ending the year with resolutions, reinvention, or a perfectly polished plan for what comes next, I would rather close with a blessing.

May you honor the path you have walked without judgment or needing to make perfect sense of it.

May you carry forward what still belongs to you and gently leave behind what does not.

May you give unfinished things the time and space they still need.

May you enter the new year with hopes and plans, while leaving room for life to unfold differently than you imagined.

May you notice beauty in ordinary moments and possibility in unexpected ones.

And may the new year meet you gently, exactly where you are.
